마터호른 (Matterhorn)은 이탈리아 (Italy) 와 스위스 (Switzerland) 사이의 경계에 위치하였으며, 체르마트 (Zermatt) 지방의 스위스 마을과 발 투어나체 (Val Tournanche) 지방의 이탈리아 마을인 브레윌 체르비니아 (Breuil-Cervinia) 사이에 우뚝 솟아 있습니다. 기술적 난이도가 아닌 초기 등산가들이 겪은 공포감 때문에 알프스 (Alps) 에서 잘 등반하지 않는 유명한 산 (the last major mountain) 이 되었습니다. 첫 심도있는 도전은 1858년쯤에 시도 되었으며, 남쪽 진로가 더 어려웠지만, 그런 모습에도 불구하고 이탈리아 쪽에서 대부분 출발되었고, 등반 대원들은 반복적으로 난해하고 미끄러운 돌을 발견하고 되돌아가야만 했습니다.

The Matterhorn is located on the border between Switzerland and Italy, towering over the Swiss town of Zermatt and the Italian town Breuil-Cervinia in the Val Tournanche. It was the last major mountain of the Alps to be climbed, not merely because of its technical difficulty, but of the fear it inspired in early mountaineers. The first serious attempts began around 1858, mostly from the Italian side, but despite appearances, the southern routes are harder, and parties repeatedly found themselves on difficult slippery rock and had to turn back.
