거울에 비춰지는 햇빛에 반짝임을 모스 부호로 사용해서 신호를 전달하는 무선 태양 통신기인 회광통신기(heliograph)를 사용하고 있는 활약한 오스만 제국 신호병을 제 1차 세계대전 때 호그(Huj, هوج) 에서 찍은 사진입니다. 불빛은 거울 뒤에 설치된 막대(레버) 를 통해 기울려서 생성합니다. 회광통신기는 단순하지만, 장거리 통신을 빠르게 하기 위해 사용되는 아주 효율적인 도구입니다. 8" x 8" 거울을 사용해 183 마일(295 Km) 거리로 통신했다는 기록이 있습니다. 사진에 있는 것은 직경 5" 정도 되는 거울이며, 30 마일 통신용입니다.

A World War I Ottoman signaling crew in Huj (1917) with a heliograph (far left), a wireless solar telegraph that signals using Morse code flashes of sunlight reflected by a mirror. The flashes were generated by tilting the mirror with a lever mounted behind it. The heliograph is a simple but highly effective instrument for instantaneous optical communication over long distances. The record is 183 mi (295 km), using a 8"x8" mirror. The depicted device has a 5" diameter mirror, rated for 30 mile range.
