달의 위상 (phases of the Moon) 에 관한 애니메이션 (animation) 입니다. 달이 지구를 중심으로 공전(회전) 하기 때문에, 태양은 달에게 다른 방향으로 빛을 비춰서 다른 위상을 만들어냅니다. 이 사진에서, 달은 커지면서 약간 "흔들리게 (wobble, libration, 진동)" 보입니다. 앞 부분 (확대) 에서는 지구에게 조금씩 다가가기 때문에 커지지만, 후자 (진동) 는 달의 회전율이 고정되었기 때문에 그러합니다. 그 원인으로는 지구를 중심으로 달이 타원 궤도 (elliptical orbit) 상에 가변하는 속도로 공전하므로, 두 움직임들을 완전하게 (계산하여) 서로 상쇄 (cancel) 시키지 못해 발생합니다. 이런 달의 모습의 변화는 시간별 사진 촬영술 (time-lapse photography) 이 없으면 알아차리기엔 너무 느립니다.

An animation of the phases of the Moon. As the Moon revolves around the Earth, the Sun lights the Moon from a different side, creating the different phases. In the image, the Moon appears to get bigger as well as "wobble" slightly. The former is caused by it getting closer to the Earth, while the latter happens because the Moon's rotation rate is fixed. Because it revolves around the earth in an elliptical orbit at a variable speed, the two motions do not perfectly cancel each other out. Such changes in the Moon's appearance happen too slowly to be noticeable without time-lapse photography.
