보름달은 지구를 기준으로 태양의 반대 방향에 위치 했을 때, 그리고 3개의 천체 상들이 가능한 일자로 가깝게 맞춰 졌을때 볼수 있는 달의 위상 입니다. 이 때는 지구에서 보는 관측자가 보기엔 지구(항상 보여지는 가까운 방향의 반구 부분)를 보고 있는 달의 반구가 태양에 의해 전부 밝혀져 둥굴게 보입니다. 보름달 동안에만 지구에서 보이지 않는 (항상 보여지지 않는 먼 방향의 반구 부분) 달의 반대편 반구만이 완전하게 비취지지 않습니다.
