장미의 가시인, 가시 (Prickles, 프릭클) 은 껍질과 표피가 바늘-처럼 생긴 확장체로 종종 가지나 줄기가 변한 가시 (thorns, 쓰론) 이나 잎이 변한 가시 (spines, 스파인) 와 혼돈됩니다. 3가지 구조 모두 날카롭고 뽀족한 끝으로 된 단단 구조체로 보통 초식동물로 부터 자신을 보호하기 위해서 사용됩니다. 줄기가 변한 가시가 처음으로 빠른 재생에 부적한 자원을 제공받는 모래 환경에서 식물 자신을 방어하기 위한 매커니즘으로 진화되어 나온 것으로 보입니다.

The prickles of a rose plant. Prickles, which are needle-like extensions of the cortex and epidermis, are often confused with thorns, which are modified branches or stems, and spines, which are modified leaves. All three are hard structures with sharp, pointy ends, which are generally used by plants to protect themselves from herbivores. Thorns likely first evolved as a defense mechanism in plants growing in sandy environments which provided inadequate resources for fast regeneration.
