누가복음 (루카 복음서, Luke) 2:14 에 나오는 천사들이 예수님의 탄생을 목자들에게 알려주면서 부른 노래 가사인 Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax (글로리아 인 엑첼시스 데오 엗 인 떼라 빡스 "높은신 곳에 있는 하나님(하느님)께 영광 그리고 땅에는 평화를") 이라는 단어가 새겨진 천사의 판화입니다. 이것은 오늘날 '지극히 높은 곳에서는 하나님(하느님)께 영광' 이라고 알려진 찬가의 근간을 형성하였습니다. 교황연대표 (Liber Pontificalis)에서는 2세기경 크리스마스 미사에서 텔레스포루스 추기경 (Pope Telesphorus) 이 이를 인용해 찬송했다는 전통이 기록되어 있고, 지금도 비잔틴식 전례의 아침 기도 (Byzantine Rite Orthros service) 에서 이를 온전히 암송되고 있습니다. An engraving of an angel with the words Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax ("Glory to God in the highest and peace on Earth"), the words angels sang when the birth of Christ was announced to shepherds, as recounted in Luke 2:14. This formed the basis of a doxology which is today known as Gloria in Excelsis Deo. A tradition recorded in the Liber Pontificalis states that Pope Telesphorus used the hymn at the Mass of Christmas Day in the 2nd century A.D., and it is still recited in its entirety in the Byzantine Rite Orthros service. The Gloria has been and still is sung to a wide variety of melodies, modern scholars having catalogued well over two hundred of them.
