Damage to Richmond, Virginia, at the end of the American Civil War. Being the capital of the Confederacy and a vital source of materiel and manpower, Richmond was the target of numerous attacks by the Union Army during the war. When the city's capture became imminent, the Confederate Army abandoned the city, setting fire to its military stores as they retreated.
