게리맨더는 1812년 이상하게 형성된 미국 메사추세츠 주의 하원 의원 선거구의 경계모양을 묘사한 만평 만화이며, 오늘날 이러한 과정을 게리맨더링(자기당에 유리하게 만드는 과정)으로 알려져 있습니다. 이런 모습은 당시 현직 주지사였던 엘브릿지 게리가 속한 민주 공화당이 연방당을 상대하기 유리하게 자기당의 후보자들에게 호의를 배푸는 차원에서 주 입법부에 의해 만들어졌고, 이 용어는 게리와 살라맨더(불도마뱀)(이 그림에서는 용에 더 가깝습니다.) 로 된 혼성어(포르맨토)입니다.

"The Gerry-Mander", an editorial cartoon from 1812 depicting the boundaries of what was considered an oddly-shaped congressional district in the U.S. state of Massachusetts, a process known today as gerrymandering. The shape was set by the state legislature to favor the candidates of incumbent Governor Elbridge Gerry's Democratic-Republican Party over those of the Federalists, and the term is a portmanteau of Gerry and salamander (portrayed here more like a dragon).
