위치에 따른 동물 해부학적 용어들은 사람 해부학에서 사용되는 용어들과 다름니다. 동물들에게 머리 끝을 "상단(cranial end, 두개골의 끝)" 이라 하고 꼬리의 끝을 "하단(caudal end, 미골부의 끝)"이라 부릅니다. 몸의 방향은 보통으로 "등뒤(dorsal)"가 위로 향하며; 반대방향은, 일반적으로 모든 다리를 사용할 때 땅에 가장 가까운 쪽을 향하며, 수영을 하거나 나를 때에는 이(그 방향을)를 "배쪽(ventral)" 이라 합니다.

Zootomical terms of location differ from from the terminology used in human anatomy. In animals, the head end is caled the "cranial end" and the tail end is the "caudal end". The side of the body normally oriented upwards is the "dorsal" side; the opposite side, typically the one closest to the ground when walking on all legs, swimming or flying, is the "ventral" side.
