roundabout (원형교차로)

도로의 왼편에서 자동차가 운행하는 나라에서의 원형교차로 내의 움직임을 나타낸 그림입니다. 원형교차로(roundabout)는 교통 흐름이 중앙섬을 둘러싸면서 우선 양보를 하면서 순회하는 방식의 장치로 교차로 혹은 교통 정온화 분류들 중에 하나입니다. 원형 교통섬(traffic circle)과 달리 원형교차로는 들어선 차량들에 진행 우선권이 있으며, 주차는 허용 안되고, 보행자는 이 중앙섬으로 접근이 제한됩니다.

A diagram of movement within a roundabout in a country where traffic drives on the left. A roundabout is a type of road junction, or traffic calming device, at which traffic streams circularly around a central island after first yielding to the circulating traffic. Unlike with traffic circles, vehicles on a roundabout have priority over the entering vehicle, parking is not allowed and pedestrians are usually prohibited from the central island.

roundabout 과 traffic circle 은 우리말에는 원형교차로로 같이 해석되나 위키피디아에서는 따로 구분을 지어야 한다고 표기되어 있습니다. 그 이유는 roundabout 이 traffic circle 을 개선하여 나왔으며, 진행방식이 roundabout 은 일관적인 반면에 traffic circle 은 표지판으로 따로 표기해서 다를 수 있고, 보행자 통로나 진입 우선순위가 다르기 때문이라고 합니다. http://www.tfhrc.gov/safety/00068.pdf 에서 5-6 페이지 참고
